We got up at 6 AM Saturday morning to help Catherine, our hostess, in the restaurant for a group who wanted an early breakfast. Once everything was cleaned up she took us on an all-day trip. We started at the market in Bourges, then to a second-hand shop for us to pick up some cheap work clothes for painting and such. From there we traveled about 35 miles away to the "world-reknown" vineyard region of Sancerre.
It rained all morning; thank goodness the market was inside. The photos of the colorful foods and beautiful bread says it all; it was fabulous!
Catherine bought many items at the market to use in her restaurant.
Gorgeous! The vines are full of grapes and the harvest is begining.
These vineyards are Sauvignon Blanc
The road entering the village of Sancerre is lined with trees planted by Nepoleon
A tour of Sancerre. This medieval village has lots of history with most of the famous conquerers of the ancient world. It is along the "Roman Road"and overlooks the Loire river.
David trying out the "grape-picking" simulator. Just another day on the farm!
Awe! Isn't that a nice looking couple?!
After a long hard day on the farm it's time to test the fruits of my labor.
Catherine took us to a quaint little cafe that served wonderful food. The dish on the right is called "Oeufs en couilles d'ane", translated "Donkey Testicles". However, it is really poached eggs with a red wine sauce, bread and cheese; whew!
Sancerre brewery. We were wanting a tour, but there were none this day.
One of hundreds of wineries located in this vineyard region; this is where Catherine buys wine for her restaurant.
Linda and the Pinot Noir grape; they all taste great straight off the vine!
We took one of the vineyard access roads for some fantastic views.
Back home to see a beautiful sunset behind a church just across the street from the hotel.
There were supposed to be only 2 guests scheduled to dine at the restaurant, but there ended up being 17 wanting 3-course meals plus coffee. Catherine took all the orders, cooked and served everyone. We helped prepare some dishes, clean tables, washed dishes and cleaned the kitchen. We ended the day at 10:30 PM.
What a great day!
