We flew from Paris to Budapest on Wednesday and our friends Michal and Blazena picked us up from the airport and drove us to their home in Presov, Slovakia. Michal's uncle is letting us stay in a brand new apartment he bought to rent out. He said he will rent it once we leave Presov. Below are some pictures from the balcony and a few from inside.
This is Michal and Blazena's youngest son Jacob playing with David at their house. Jacob is very shy but he really likes playing with David.
Michal and Blazena's daughter Daniella made us breakfast the next morning
The apartment we are staying in still needed a water system installed so that was David's first job to help with. We had to make a trip to the hardware store first.
Installing the system. It took most of the day, but they did it and we now have water! In the picture on the right is Michal, David and Joseph (Michal's Uncle.)
We all took a quick break for lunch.
Very nice and one of the biggest or tallest burgers we've ever had!
On Friday we drove to a town called Lipany where Michal's uncle lives. They said we could work for them and they would feed us lunch. The picture below is of a church along the way.
As soon as we arrived they had coffee and cake waiting for us
They asked if David could look at their electric gate that stopped working. David took it apart, but said it must be a sensor. One thing he couldn't fix.
So much for working...next we ate a wonderful lunch!
The couple in the picture is Michal's cousin (also named Linda) and her husband Michael.
This is their 3 month old son Simon and Michal's aunt; she wouldn't let us take her picture.
After leaving Lipany we stopped in the town of Sabinov.
This is just a sign on one of the buildings
On Saturday Michal's aunt and cousins wanted to take us on a trip. Our first stop was in the town of Litmanova about an hour away. It is a small ski resort and is said to be where the virgin Mary appeared to 2 young girls for 5 years. Below are some of the stages of the cross going up the mountain.
At the top of the hill a service was going on.
A chapel was built in the place where Mary appeared to the girls.
This is Michael and Linda's 2 year old son Thomas.
A Greek Catholic church in Litmanova
We stopped for lunch at a typical Slovakian restaurant in the town of Stara` Lubovna.
Pictures of our meals. Wonderful!
After lunch we visited a castle in Stara` Lubovna
Mountain range called High Tatras we could see from the castle
We toured the frontier castle of Stara` Lubovna`
Going down in the dungeon
Great views from the castle!
A copy of an original architectural drawing of the castle from the 1750. They were planning an upgrade but never got around to it.
David using a hammer drill at the Pacinda's new house
One evening while at Michal's and Blazena's, she showed us their first two kid's baby books where Erica and Lindsey wrote a note to them back on April 8, 2001, the last time we were here
A section of the local running/biking path; really pretty!
Chips, homemade salsa and margaritas; a great evening!
This castle is called Spis and is one of the largest castle sites in central Europe. We drove to Trstena` on Monday, 2 1/2 hours away, to pick up Misho (Michal and Blazena's 16 year old son at the hospital. Misho went "downhill mountain biking" with some friends and had a crash and ended up in the hospital with a concussion. He is fine, but he had to stay a couple nights for observation. We saw several castles and churches along the way.
Some pics of the hospital Misho was at. This is what government healthcare would be like.
We stopped on our way back for lunch; great food!
More castles and churches
We took a 5-mile run Tuesday morning in and around our town of Presov
After our run we stopped in the city center for breakfast at "Cukraren Mily"; fantastic! We got all of this for less than $8.00!
A quick look inside the local cathedral, we will be back later for more pics
On the running path headed back to the apartment.
Keep in touch, more posts to come. Having a wonderful time in Slovakia!
