Our Last Week in Slovakia

We spent our last week in Slovakia touring around Presov and a few other nearby villages.  On Monday we walked around Presov and to a church on a hill called "Calvary".  Spectacular views!

Calvary Church built in the 18th Century

We had dinner in Presov Centrum at an Italian Restaurant

Night view of the cathedral in Presov Center
On Tuesday we painted the balcony rails of the apartment we have been staying in this month

We found an Italian Gelato place in the center of Presov that
actually had our favorite flavor .....Yogurt
On Wednesday morning Michal and Jakub took us to a small village just outside of Presov called Solivar.  There was an old Salt Factory here many years ago and is now a museum.

From there we went to a statue on a hill that represents the
Slovakian uprising during World War II

We stopped at a small restaurant in the woods for lunch

One of the many traditional soups in Slovakia - This one was made from bean and cabbage.

On Thursday morning we went to a town in the Northeast corner of Slovakia called Svidnik with Michal and Blazena to tour a few places of interest from World War I and II.  Below is a castle we passed along the way

Our next stop was at another War Memorial for the Battle of the Dukla Pass right at the border of Slovakia and Poland

This stone was place for 80 unknown soldiers who died.  The rocks placed on top means some may have been Jewish.

Nearby was a field where the communists had set up army-tank displays years ago

We've had a great time here and hope to return someday.  Off to Budapest for a couple of days then to Germany for two weeks then home again.  We will post a few more blogs before heading home.
