3 Days in Switzerland

On Tuesday, April 18th, we made our way through Italy and into southern Switzerland.  In January, while on our South American cruise, we met a wonderful couple from Switzerland and exchanged contact information.  We emailed them to let them know we were going to be driving through Switzerland and they were kind enough to invite us to their summer house in Avegno, Switzerland.

On our drive through Italy we stopped to take a picture of the Soave Castle Ruins
Arriving in Avegno, Switzerland.  Avegno is a very small village in the Ticino region and in the Maggia Valley dating back to the 1100's.  The houses are all made of granite stone from this area.
Once we greeted our friends (Lauri and Corrine), Lauri took us on a tour around the village.
 This is the village square

Such a beautiful place with all the camallia bushes in full bloom!
Just something Corrine whipped up!  This looks like an apple pie, but it is a very traditional dish that is eaten more like a meal.
After lunch Lauri and Corrine drove us to a quaint town on the Lago Maggiore where we walked along the boardwalk and stopped at an outdoor cafe to take in the views.

On Wednesday morning Lauri and Corrine took us on a tour of the Maggia Valley.  Beautiful countryside with many water falls
The mountainsides are covered with granite stone villages
This village is called Cavergno

We took a nice hike up to this large waterfall
Endless beautiful views!
Ponte dei Salti Stone Bridge

A museum with an old grape press made from an entire trunk of a large tree
These wine barrels were in one of the cave type rooms made into the rock mountains
Wild flower meadows and mountains
This suspended bridge is about 400 yards long.

After a a couple of wonderful days and with Lauri and Corrine we headed north on our way to Germany.  We stopped in Lucern Switzerland and toured the old part of the city starting with the old wooden "chapel bridge" shown below.

View of the store fronts from on the chapel bridge

We then stopped in Schaffhausen to see this monstrous waterfall on the Rhein river

This is the view from the other side of the river in Neuhausen, Switzerland.
You can't visit Switzerland and not stop at a local dairy farm.  We bought some local wine and some fresh strawberry yogurt!

On our way to Germany for a few days....
