Final Days in Iceland

We finished things up here at the Grabrok Guesthouse and Restaurant in Iceland.  We also had a wonderful experience seeing the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights the last few days.  It was incredible!  The show started at around 9:45 p.m. and was still going strong after 11:00 p.m.

The following pictures show the progress of David's major project he worked during the month.  This first picture shows what "Room 5" looked like when we arrived.  There was a clog in the guest house sewer line; it all backed up into room 5 which caused it to be closed for two months.
David first had to finish gutting the bathroom to try and find the problem
The problem was found in the back of the hotel so David had to connect the plumbing.  A couple of years ago the hotel was replumbed, but they didn't bother reconnecting room 5 and 6 to the new piping and just covered the end of the existing pipe up with dirt.  The end of the old sewer line was 5 feet away from being connected to the new system.  The manager even hired plumbers and they couldn't find the problem.  Problem is now solved.
 Reconnecting indoor plumbing
All ready to put in a new floor
He mixed the concrete in a 5-gallon bucket, spread it by hand and a 2x4; no tools
Tile installed and putting in grout with a cheese slicer - That's a first!
Bathroom is ready to be used!  Notice the diagonal tile used to cover up the tear in the wall.  The original bathroom had a shower pan and shower doors, but were destoyed when removed so now there is an open shower with a curtain and floor drain.
This was one of the sheds on the property that you couldn't even walk in.  David cleared it out, got rid of two loads of junk, and reorganized it. You can park a small tractor in it now.
Outside picture of the shed - David also rebuilt and rehung both doors on the shed

Linda's job here was managing the front counter (reception area) and general store.  This is a picture of the homemade pasta made at the restaurant.
 More of the general store
Organic Pasta and homemade bread is made daily at the restaurant.  The hamburger and hotdog buns are all homemade and are wonderful!  Linda was able to get the recipe!
Just one of the 40 plus chickens we took care of that gave us fresh eggs daily!
This is one of the two rental "Summer Houses" on the property
We left Grabrok on Friday and spent the night in Reykjavik to catch an early morning flight to Norway

Well...that is it for Iceland, at least for now.....We've agreed to return to this  same guesthouse next March for a few weeks to help with another project.  We're heading back to Norway on Saturday so we will keep posting!
