Our Week In Melbourne Australia

We've had a wonderful week exploring and getting to know Melbourne.  We booked (2) Air B&B apartments (one for the first 6 nights and another for the last 2 nights closer to the main train station).  Both rooms and apartments were great!  Here are a few pictures from our week in Melbourne.

We arrived Melbourne on Sunday night so first thing Monday morning we found a park near our apartment with a great running trail around a lake.  Beautiful views of the city.
Below are pictures of the apartment we stayed at for 6 days

After our run we headed for the beach and had a wonderful lunch

Very close to where we were staying were the Botanical Gardens where they had a War Memorial for both World Wars
We called this the "Eifel Tower".  It actually sits on top of Melbourne's performing arts center
Queen Victoria's Open Market - This market spans more than 2 city blocks both indoor and outdoor selling everything from fruits, vegetables, spices, meats and clothing

David found a place to practice his pull ups - Yarra River pedestrian bridge

One main attraction in Melbourne is "The Eureka Tower".  At the 88th floor it is the highest viewing point in the Southern Hemisphere.  The elevator travels from ground to floor 88 in just 38 seconds.
Wonderful views from the top of the tower

Running around the city is a great way to see the sights

The city streets are lined with Sycamore and Elm trees; these are Sycamores of course

We ran aross this street-side art exhibit in Federation Square
Melbourne is know for their rooftop restaurants.
Great place to have lunch and take in the views.

This park has a John F Kennedy Memorial
We decided to rent a car Friday and head out of the city to drive "The Great Ocean Road"
Great views along the coast south of Melbourne

Beach with rock stacking - thousands!
We could have had "Tea and Scones" but we couldn't pass up having Lavazza Coffee instead!
Our next stop was "The 12 Apostles".  These rock formations were called the "Sow & Piglets" before 1922.  The name was changed to the 12 Apostles for tourism.

This is called "Loch Ard Gorge" named after a ship that wrecked in this gorge in 1878
Our host told us about a free 5K that takes place in a park near her apartment every Saturday morning so we ran with 322 strangers

We moved to our new apartment Saturday afternoon.  We had a wonderful view of the city and the Yarra River from the 20th floor.  This is our bedroom.
View from our balcony
Saturday afternoon we went to an Australian League Pro Football game at the largest stadium in Australia.  Seating capacity is 100,000; they can pack in about 108,000 legally.
We watched St. Kilda win their first game of the season against Collingwood and won 119 - 90

This stadium was originally built in 1858.  Even though it seats 100,000, they used to allow many more people in before safety regulations governed attendance.  Get this: the record amount of people to ever attend an event in this stadium was 130,000 in 1959.  Want to guess what the event was?  Billy Graham Crusade.  Wow!!
Meat Pie - It's what you eat at football games in Australia
We got to go to church Sunday - Hillsong Melbourne City Campus; it was great!
Wonderful lunch in the Italian Precinct

We came across this street filled with graffiti, or as they call it in Melbourne, Street Art
We got a kick out of how Australian's call McDonalds "Maccas".  McDonalds even uses that nickname on their signs.

We had a wonderful time in Australia with our friends from last year and newly made friends during this trip.  We will spend one more week traveling in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam before heading home for the summer.
