Touring the Westfjords or What We Like to Call "The West Fingers of Iceland"

On Friday we hit the road again for another 3 days of roaming around Iceland.  This time in the Westfjords, the Northwest corner of Iceland that looks a little bit like a hand with fingers.  More gorgeous scenes on our drive.

We stopped for a few minutes for photos when we arrived at the first section of one of the fjords

Antoine works with us at the Grabrok Guesthouse and has the same days off as us so he decided to come along on this trip.  The car we drive only seats 2, so we had to improvise.  We took turns driving and riding in the "cage".

The town across the water is the location of our first guesthouse.  We just had to drive around the fjord to get there.

We made it.  Very nice 2 bedroom house.
It even had a projector and big screen so we got to watch a movie
David explored the basement and found National Geographic Magazines dating back to the 1920's
The day was still a little early so we drove out of town to the end of the fjord
We found a road going up the Bolafjall mountain and came upon this Coast Guard Observatory that used to be a NATO site.
Linda and Antoine reading about the Observatory
Of couse we couldn't stay behind the safety ropes.  There was a rock to explore and stand on!
What a view!

We all took our turn at danger
Driving down the mountain we came across this beautiful black sand beach

Fresh water flowing right into the sea

The next morning we headed out around some more fjords and came acoss the small fishing village of Sudureyri.  We saw several of these buildings and read they are used for making dried fish.
We drove through this tunnel (9 km long) where you actually made a turn inside the tunnel

The small town across the water is called Flateyri.  We wanted a better view so we did some mountain climbing until the wind got a little too strong.

This is Dynjandi Waterfall; known as "The Jewel of the Westfjords" and cascades over 300 feet
It was a perfect misty day to visit a waterfall

We loved how close you can get to the edge
Here's another shot of Antoine
And of course we had to do some jumping pictures
From there we continued up another mountain for a great view of several fjords in the distance
There were many unpaved and curvy roads that we drove on at times
On Sunday morning we left the town of Petreksfjord and headed to the very western tip of the Westfjords called Latrabjarg.  The photos below are of our drive to get there.

We passed by this museum with an old U.S Navy airplane outside
The cliffs of Latrabjarg.  They call it a "bird cliff" and it is home to millions of different species including the Puffin although it was too late in the season to see them.  They go out to the sea in the Fall and Winter and come to these cliffs in the Spring and Summer to have their pufflings.

From Latrabjarg we started our journey back to Grabrok and came across this hotpool right at the edge of the ocean.  It was a man-made pool but was being filled by a hot spring coming from the nearby mountain.  If we didn't have a 3 hour drive ahead of us we would have gotten in it for a little bit.

20 minutes from our guesthouse and we came across this farm selling fresh cheese, milk and ice cream.  We arrived right at milking time so we could see their process.
They also had some other guests that tried to come in
That's it from our 3 day trip but we also wanted to show that we really do work.  Linda works at the front reception area where people check in to the guesthouse, order food from the cafe and buy items in the general store
David has been the go-to maintenance man.  There are many things that need repairing here so he is staying very busy.  Here he was moving a refrigerator to look at a clogged drain.
David is also pretty good at washing dishes
The general store gets deliveries twice a week; Linda enters the items into the inventory system.
This is the "Staff Room".  We get some pretty good meals here and we all get to eat dinner together.  Most of people in this picture left last weekend and we now have 4 more new volunteers working with us.  We get to make new friends.
We look forward to our next trip.  We plan on visiting the tallest waterfall in Iceland and maybe the North.
